Tropicana was founded in 1947 by Anthony T. Rossi, an Italian immigrant who started with a small fruit packing business in Bradenton, Florida. Rossi revolutionized the industry in 1954 by developing flash pasteurization, which allowed chilled, fresh-tasting orange juice to be shipped across the United States for the first time. This innovation led to the launch of the brand's flagship product, Tropicana Pure Premium.
Historically, Tropicana underwent several ownership changes, being acquired by Beatrice Foods in 1978 and later by Seagram in 1988. PepsiCo acquired the brand in 1998 for $3.3 billion. In a major strategic shift in 2021, PepsiCo sold a 61% majority stake in Tropicana and other juice brands to the French private equity firm PAI Partners, forming the joint venture known as Tropicana Brands Group. PepsiCo retains a 39% non-controlling interest and continues to manage distribution in certain regions.
Today, Tropicana products are manufactured in multiple locations worldwide to ensure freshness, with significant production facilities remaining in Florida and other regions near major citrus groves like those in Brazil. The brand continues to lead the global market in chilled fruit juices, operating under the management of Tropicana Brands Group headquartered in Chicago.
