Don Papa Rum is a super-premium dark rum produced on the island of Negros Occidental in the Philippines. Known locally as "Sugarlandia," this region is the sugarcane heartland of the country, providing the rich molasses (often called "black gold") that serves as the base for the spirit. The rum is distilled and aged in American oak barrels on the island, benefiting from the hot tropical climate which accelerates the aging process and imparts distinct notes of vanilla, honey, and candied fruits.
The brand was launched in 2012 by Stephen Carroll and Andrew John Garcia through the Bleeding Heart Rum Company. Inspired by the historical figure Papa Isio, a leader of the 19th-century Philippine Revolution, the brand quickly transitioned from a local newcomer to a global sensation. In March 2023, the British multinational beverage giant Diageo completed its acquisition of the brand for an initial €260 million, integrating it into a prestigious portfolio that includes spirits like Johnnie Walker and Tanqueray. As of 2026, the brand remains a flagship of Diageo's "super-premium plus" segment, maintaining its production roots in the Philippines while leveraging Diageo's global distribution network.
