Haier is a leading global brand in the home appliance sector, tracing its roots back to the Qingdao Refrigerator Co. in China during the early 1980s. Under the leadership of Zhang Ruimin, the brand underwent a dramatic transformation from a struggling factory to a global leader, famously symbolized by the destruction of 76 defective refrigerators to instill a culture of quality.
Today, Haier is the flagship brand of the Haier Smart Home group. Unlike many other major conglomerates, Haier has expanded significantly through strategic international acquisitions. Notable among these was the 2016 purchase of GE Appliances, the home appliance division of General Electric, which solidified its presence in the North American market. It also acquired the New Zealand brand Fisher & Paykel and the European manufacturer Candy.
While its global headquarters and main manufacturing hubs remain in Qingdao, China, Haier operates a decentralized 'Rendanheyi' management model with manufacturing plants and research centers scattered across every major continent. This ensures that their products, ranging from smart air conditioners to advanced laundry systems, are tailored to local market needs while being owned by the parent entity in China.
