Cathedral City Cheddar Cheese

Cathedral City is the United Kingdom's most popular brand of cheddar cheese. It was originally established in 1966 by Mendip Foods, based in the historic cathedral city of Wells in Somerset. The brand’s identity, including its logo and name, is directly inspired by Wells Cathedral.

In 1995, the brand was acquired by Dairy Crest, which shifted the primary manufacturing operations to the Davidstow Creamery in Cornwall. Despite the change in location, the cheese continues to be made using 100% British milk sourced from farms across Cornwall, Devon, and Somerset.

In 2019, the Canadian global dairy giant Saputo Inc. acquired Dairy Crest (now Saputo Dairy UK), bringing Cathedral City under its international portfolio. Under Saputo's ownership, the brand has expanded significantly beyond the British market, launching in Canada and the United States in 2020. Today, Cathedral City remains a hallmark of British dairy excellence, successfully exported and marketed worldwide while maintaining its production roots in the South West of England.
