Rowntree's Fruit Pastilles

Rowntree's is one of the United Kingdom's most iconic confectionery brands, with a history dating back to 1862. The company was founded by Henry Rowntree in York, England, where he was later joined by his brother Joseph Rowntree. Together with French confectioner August Claude Gaget, they developed the 'Fruit Pastille' in 1881, which remains the brand's flagship product. For over a century, the brand has been a staple of the British candy market, known for its focus on fruit-flavored gummy sweets.

While originally a family-owned British enterprise, the company underwent a major transition in the late 20th century. Rowntree's brand became part of the global food industry through acquisition, shifting from an independent York-based company to a subsidiary of a multinational corporation. Today, it operates as a significant brand within the sugar confectionery portfolio of its parent company, maintaining its historical ties to its manufacturing base in Fawdon, Newcastle upon Tyne.

Ownership of the Rowntree's brand currently sits with Nestlé, the Swiss multinational food and beverage giant. Nestlé acquired the Rowntree Mackintosh company in 1988 after a high-profile takeover battle. Under Nestlé's ownership, the Rowntree's brand has expanded its legacy by introducing modern variants like 'Randoms' and transitioning many of its classic recipes to vegan-friendly formulas to meet contemporary consumer preferences.
