Rao's is a premium pasta sauce brand that originated from the renowned Rao's restaurant in New York City, established in 1896. In 1992, the restaurant began selling its signature marinara sauce to the public, leading to the formation of Rao's Specialty Foods, Inc. The brand is celebrated for its high-quality ingredients and traditional Italian recipes. In 2017, Sovos Brands, a food and beverage company backed by Advent International, acquired Rao's Specialty Foods. Sovos Brands expanded its portfolio with Rao's, Michael Angelo's Gourmet Foods, and Noosa Yogurt. In August 2023, Campbell Soup Company acquired Sovos Brands for approximately $2.7 billion, thereby gaining ownership of the Rao's brand. This acquisition aimed to enhance Campbell's presence in the premium food segment. To strengthen its supply chain, Campbell's further acquired a 49% stake in La Regina di San Marzano die Antonio Romano SpA and La Regina Atlantic LLC, the primary producers of Rao's tomato-based pasta sauces, in December 2025. This strategic move ensures greater control over the production and quality of Rao's products. Despite its Italian heritage, Rao's sauces are primarily produced in the United States, with some products also made in Italy. The brand's commitment to quality and authenticity has made it a favorite among consumers seeking premium pasta sauces.
