Oreo, often called 'the world's favorite cookie,' was originally introduced by the National Biscuit Company (Nabisco) in New York City in 1912. The brand has a long-standing history of being the top-selling biscuit brand worldwide, specifically known for its signature sandwich style consisting of two cocoa disks with a sweet cream filling.
While the brand originated in the United States, its manufacturing is highly globalized. For the Australian and New Zealand markets, Oreo products are predominantly manufactured in Indonesia. This regional production serves the Oceania area, ensuring efficiency and localized supply chains. However, Oreo maintains manufacturing plants in dozens of countries including the US, China, and Bahrain to meet global demand.
Today, Oreo is owned by Mondelēz International, a major American multinational confectionery, food, and beverage conglomerate. Mondelēz was formed in 2012 as a spin-off from Kraft Foods Inc. In Australia, the brand is managed under the local subsidiary Mondelēz Australia, which oversees the distribution and marketing of the product across the country.
