C&A is a storied international fashion retail chain with deep historical roots dating back to 1841. It was founded in Sneek, Netherlands, by brothers Clemens and August Brenninkmeijer, whose initials form the brand name. The family business transitioned from trading linen to becoming a pioneer in ready-to-wear fashion, opening its first fixed retail store in 1861.

Today, the brand's European operations are headquartered in Vilvoorde, Belgium, and Düsseldorf, Germany. Manufacturing is global and decentralized; while a significant portion of production occurs in high-volume regions like India and Bangladesh, the company recently reshored some specialized production to Germany. In 2021, C&A opened the 'Factory for Innovation in Textiles' (FIT) in Mönchengladbach to produce sustainable denim products locally in Europe.

Ownership of C&A is held through COFRA Holding AG, a Swiss-based entity owned by the descendants of the founding Brenninkmeijer family. While the brand has global presence, its operations in Brazil are partially public through C&A Modas S.A., while licensed operations exist in China and Mexico under different regional ownership structures. The brand remains one of the world's most enduring family-led retail giants.
