Starobrno is a historic brewery located in Brno, Czech Republic, with origins dating back to 1325. The brewery was established in its current form in 1872 by Josef Mandl and Hermann Hayek, who modernized the existing Cistercian convent brewery. Over the years, Starobrno has become renowned for its unpasteurized lagers, crafted using Moravian barley, Žatec hops, and high-quality local water. Their flagship product, Starobrno Medium, is a pale 11° lager with an alcohol content of 4.7%, celebrated for its balanced and crisp flavor. In 1994, Starobrno became part of the Austrian concern BBAG (Österreichische BrauBeteiligungs AG), and following the merger between BBAG and Heineken Group in 2003, it became a subsidiary of Heineken Česká republika a.s., responsible for brewing and distributing Heineken products in the Czech Republic. The brewery's portfolio includes a variety of unpasteurized beers, such as Staré Brno, Drak, and Unfiltered, as well as seasonal specials like the green beer produced annually on Maundy Thursday. Despite its integration into Heineken, Starobrno maintains its traditional brewing methods and continues to be a significant contributor to the Czech beer culture.
