Dreher is one of Hungary's most iconic beer brands, with a legacy dating back to 1854 when Anton Dreher Sr., a pioneer in the brewing industry, established the foundation for what would become a cornerstone of Central European beer culture. The Dreher family played a vital role in popularizing lager brewing techniques across the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The specific brand shown, Dreher Gold, remains a flagship product representing this historical lineage.
Over the decades, the ownership of the Dreher brewery in Budapest has transitioned through various hands, reflecting the changing landscape of the global beverage industry. After being nationalized during the socialist era, it was eventually privatized. In 1993, it became part of South African Breweries (later SABMiller). Following the massive merger between Anheuser-Busch InBev and SABMiller, the brand was divested to comply with regulatory requirements.
Today, Dreher is part of the Asahi Breweries Europe Group, a subsidiary of Asahi Group Holdings, Ltd., based in Japan. While the brand maintains its deep Hungarian roots and its primary production facility in Kőbánya, Budapest, it is now part of a global portfolio that emphasizes premium international lagers and Japanese craftsmanship.
