The brand was famously launched (or revitalized) in early 2019 as a direct response to a pricing dispute between EDEKA and The Kraft Heinz Company, which led to a temporary supply shortage of Heinz products. To fill the gap on the shelves with a premium-feeling alternative, EDEKA introduced Papa Joe's with a design and marketing aesthetic reminiscent of classic American barbecue culture.

While the branding evokes an American diner or 'crafted' feel, the product is a quintessential German retail brand. Manufacturing is handled by established German condiment specialists like Develey Senf & Feinkost GmbH or Euco GmbH (an EDEKA subsidiary), ensuring high quality and local production standards. The product prominently features the use of 100% free-range eggs (Freilandeier), catering to German consumer preferences for animal welfare. Today, Papa Joe's has evolved into a permanent fixture in EDEKA and Netto Marken-Discount stores, expanding its range from the original ketchup and mayonnaise to various specialized sauces and dips.
