Chartreuse is a renowned French herbal liqueur produced by the Carthusian monks at the Grande Chartreuse monastery, located in the Chartreuse Mountains near Grenoble. The liqueur is crafted using a secret recipe that combines 130 different herbs, plants, and flowers, resulting in a distinctive herbal flavor. The production process involves macerating these botanicals in grape alcohol, distilling the mixture, and aging it in oak casks. The exact recipe remains a closely guarded secret, known only to two monks at any given time, ensuring the liqueur's unique taste and quality. The liqueur is available in two primary varieties: Green Chartreuse, which has a higher alcohol content and a more robust flavor, and Yellow Chartreuse, which is milder and sweeter. In 1970, Chartreuse Diffusion SA was established to handle the marketing, bottling, packaging, and management of the distillery, allowing the monks to focus on their spiritual practices. This company is responsible for the commercial aspects of Chartreuse production, including distribution and sales. The distillery has experienced several relocations due to various challenges, including a mudslide in 1935 and safety concerns in 2017, leading to its move to Aiguenoire. Despite these changes, the production of Chartreuse remains deeply rooted in the traditions and practices of the Carthusian monks, maintaining its status as a symbol of French heritage and craftsmanship.
