YouTube is an American online video-sharing and social media platform that has become the world's most popular destination for video content. Founded in February 2005 by three former PayPal employees, the platform was created to allow users to easily upload, view, and share videos. Based in San Bruno, California, the service has revolutionized the way media is consumed, moving beyond traditional television to a user-generated content model.
In November 2006, less than two years after its creation, the platform was acquired by Google. Since then, it has been integrated into the broader Google ecosystem and now operates under the Alphabet Inc. holding company. While the software development and core servers are primarily managed in the United States, YouTube’s technical infrastructure is distributed globally through Google’s extensive network of data centers to ensure fast, localized delivery of content to billions of users.
