BIC is a globally recognized household name, primarily defined by its portfolio of simple, inventive, and reliable disposable products. The brand's journey into the lighter market began in 1973, following the success of its iconic ballpoint pens. Originally founded by Marcel Bich and Édouard Buffard in France, the company revolutionized the industry by focusing on high-volume, high-quality manufacturing at an accessible price point.
Today, BIC lighters are manufactured in specialized facilities across the globe to ensure safety and consistency. While the flagship factory is located in Redon, France—producing hundreds of millions of units annually—the company also maintains significant production hubs in the United States (Connecticut), Spain, and Brazil. These factories follow strict proprietary protocols to maintain the brand's reputation for safety, which includes undergoing more than 50 automatic quality checks per lighter before leaving the plant.
Société BIC S.A. remains the ultimate owner of the brand. Headquartered in Clichy, France, it is a publicly traded company on the Euronext Paris exchange. The founding Bich family continues to maintain a significant interest and leadership role in the corporation, guiding its expansion into new categories and its commitment to sustainability as the brand looks toward 2026 and beyond.
