Labubu is a line of collectible plush toys created by Hong Kong illustrator Kasing Lung. The series features zoomorphic elves with exaggerated facial expressions, with the central figure being Labubu, a monster with sharp teeth, large ears, and a scruffy appearance. Initially produced by How2Work in 2015, the brand gained wider recognition in 2019 following a collaboration with Pop Mart, a Chinese company specializing in collectible toys and pop culture merchandise. Pop Mart's 'blind box' sales model, where customers purchase sealed boxes without knowing the specific character inside, has been a significant factor in Labubu's popularity. Over time, the series expanded to include different versions of Labubu and other related figures, often released in limited runs or as part of themed sets. By 2025, Labubu had released over 300 different figurines, ranging in size and price, from $15 for a 3-inch vinyl figure to $960 for a 31-inch 'mega' edition. The brand's success has been bolstered by celebrity endorsements from figures like Rihanna, Lisa of Blackpink, and David Beckham. However, the popularity of Labubu has also led to the emergence of counterfeit versions, sometimes referred to as 'Lafufus', which have been associated with safety concerns, including choking hazards for children. To ensure authenticity, consumers are advised to purchase Labubu products from official channels and look for distinguishing features such as holograms, QR codes, and UV seals.
