Astra Helles is a pale lager beer produced by the Astra brand, which originated in Germany. The brand was initially established by the Bavaria-Brauerei in Altona, Germany, in 1897. In 1922, Bavaria-Brauerei merged with Actien-Brauerei from Hamburg-St. Pauli to form the Bavaria-St. Pauli-Brauerei. Over the years, Astra underwent several ownership changes, including acquisitions by Reemtsma Cigarettenfabriken in 1971, Gebrüder März KG in 1990, and Brau und Brunnen in 1994. In 1998, the city of Hamburg acquired the brewery, and later that year, it was sold to Holsten-Brauerei. In 2004, the Danish brewing company Carlsberg acquired Holsten-Brauerei, making Astra a subsidiary of Carlsberg. Astra Helles is brewed in Hamburg, Germany, and is part of Carlsberg's portfolio of beer brands.
