Rivella is a Swiss soft drink created in 1952 by Robert Barth, a Swiss food scientist, who sought to repurpose whey, a byproduct of cheese production. Experimentations led to a formula combining whey with herbs, fruit extracts, and other natural ingredients, resulting in Rivella’s distinct flavor profile. Initially met with skepticism, Rivella gained popularity for its unique taste and perceived health benefits, becoming one of Switzerland’s most beloved beverages. Today, Rivella continues to thrive with various versions, including classic, light, sugar-free versions, and even a vegan option. The name 'Rivella' is inspired by the Swiss town of Riva San Vitale in Canton Ticino and the Italian word 'rivelazione' (revelation). The company is headquartered in Rothrist, Canton of Aargau, Switzerland, and employs around 200 people. Rivella AG produces the original Rivella Red and Rivella Green Tea for the Swiss market and exports the Original Rivella Red to approximately 35 countries. Rivella Green Tea is produced and exported by Rivella AG in Rothrist, and Rivella Refresh is entirely outsourced to licensed bottlers.
