Ecosia is a Berlin-based search engine and web browser founded in 2009 by Christian Kroll. It operates as a social business with a unique "steward-ownership" model, ensuring that the company can never be sold and that no profits can ever be extracted for private gain. Instead, the company uses 100% of its profits for climate action, primarily for reforestation and planting trees in biodiversity hotspots across more than 35 countries.

While the search results and advertisements are powered through partnerships with Microsoft Bing and Google, Ecosia operates its own infrastructure using 200% renewable energy from its own solar plants. This means for every search conducted, Ecosia adds twice as much renewable energy to the grid as its operations consume. The brand is also recognized as the first German company to achieve B Corporation certification, reflecting its commitment to social and environmental transparency.
