SK Hynix is a South Korean semiconductor company specializing in memory chips, including DRAM and NAND flash memory. Founded in 1983 as Hyundai Electronics, it was rebranded as Hynix Semiconductor in 2001. In 2012, SK Telecom, a leading South Korean telecommunications company, acquired a controlling stake in Hynix, leading to its current name, SK Hynix. The company operates production facilities in South Korea and China, with research and development centers in Italy, the United States, Taiwan, and Belarus. SK Hynix is a major supplier of memory chips to global technology companies, including Microsoft, Apple, Asus, Dell, MSI, HP Inc., and Hewlett Packard Enterprise. As of Q1 2025, SK Hynix led the global DRAM market with a 36% share, surpassing Samsung's 34% for the first time. The company's strong performance is driven by high demand for advanced memory chips used in AI applications, with plans to double its high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chip sales in 2025 compared to 2024. Despite facing competition and potential U.S. tariffs, SK Hynix remains optimistic about future demand in the AI-driven memory chip market.
