The drink is famous for its use of genuine ginger root extract from Jamaica, a key element that has helped it maintain its position as the UK's leading ginger beer brand for decades.

While the brand celebrates its Caribbean heritage and ingredients, the product itself has historically been manufactured in the United Kingdom to serve its primary market. For many years, it was produced and distributed by Cott Beverages (referencing their UK facilities), and more recently, distribution has been linked to entities like Vimto Out of Home for draught versions.

As of 2024–2025, the brand underwent a significant transformation. After a marketing campaign suggesting its "retirement," Old Jamaica was relaunched with a modernized visual identity under its current owner, Beliv Company. Beliv is a global beverage firm (a "bevtech") that acquired the brand to expand its reach internationally, with the brand now seeing growth in markets as far as China. Beliv is a subsidiary of the Mariposa Group, which is headquartered in Guatemala.
