The brand was originally created by Block Drug, a company based in Brooklyn, New York, in 1961. The core technology involved using strontium chloride to block the pathways to the nerves in the teeth.

In 2001, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) acquired Block Drug, bringing Sensodyne into its consumer healthcare portfolio. In 2022, GSK spun off its consumer healthcare division into a new independent company named Haleon. Today, Haleon is the ultimate owner of the brand. Manufacturing of Sensodyne products takes place in various locations worldwide, including major facilities in Maidenhead, United Kingdom, and Oak Creek, Wisconsin, USA, as well as sites in India and Europe to serve different regional markets.
