Tilda is a premium food brand that is synonymous with high-quality Basmati rice. The brand was founded in the early 1970s in the United Kingdom by the Thakrar family. They were the first to bring Basmati rice to the Western market in large quantities, catering initially to the South Asian diaspora before becoming a household name across the country and the globe.
While the rice itself is grown and harvested by farmers in the foothills of the Himalayas (specifically in regions of India and Pakistan), the primary processing, cleaning, and packaging facility is located in Rainham, Essex, in the United Kingdom. This facility is known for using advanced state-of-the-art technology to ensure grain purity and quality standards.
In 2014, the brand was acquired by the American natural foods company Hain Celestial. However, in 2019, Tilda was sold to the Spanish food giant Ebro Foods. Today, Tilda exists as a key subsidiary of Ebro Foods, maintaining its British heritage while benefiting from the global distribution network of its Spanish parent company.
