Momondo was founded in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 2006 by a group of entrepreneurs as a travel metasearch engine. Unlike a travel agency that sells tickets directly, Momondo functions as a search tool that aggregates prices from hundreds of airlines and travel sites to provide price comparisons for its users. The brand quickly gained international acclaim for its colorful interface and advanced filtering systems.
In 2011, the company was acquired by the British-American travel search company Cheapflights Media, which later rebranded as Momondo Group. The most significant shift in ownership occurred in July 2017, when the global travel giant Booking Holdings (formerly The Priceline Group) acquired the Momondo Group for $550 million. Today, Momondo is an independent brand managed under the KAYAK subsidiary of Booking Holdings.
Technically developed and headquartered in Copenhagen, the platform operates globally with localized sites in over 30 countries. Its parent company, Booking Holdings, is a publicly traded American corporation and one of the world's leaders in online travel and related services.
