Canada Dry is an iconic carbonated beverage brand best known for its signature ginger ale. The brand's history dates back to 1904 when John J. McLaughlin, a pharmacist and chemist, developed the 'Dry' Ginger Ale in Toronto, Canada. Unlike contemporary ginger ales of that era, which were dark and very sweet, Canada Dry was recognized for its pale color and clean, crisp taste, which eventually led to its nickname 'The Champagne of Ginger Ales.' The brand's popularity exploded during Prohibition in the United States, as it served as an excellent mixer to mask the harsh taste of homemade spirits.
Over the decades, ownership of the brand transitioned through various beverage conglomerates. Canada Dry was acquired by Norton Simon in 1964, then merged with Dr Pepper in the 1980s. Today, Canada Dry is part of a global beverage portfolio controlled by Keurig Dr Pepper (KDP) in the North American market, while certain international rights and distribution are handled by other major entities like Coca-Cola or Asahi depending on the region.
Manufacturing of Canada Dry is highly decentralized. While it originated in Canada, the product is now produced in numerous facilities across the United States, Canada, and various international locations where the brand has licensing agreements. This global production model ensures that the beverage is readily available in local markets through a network of bottling partners and distribution centers.
