Sebago Docksides Boat Shoes

Sebago is an iconic American footwear brand founded in 1946 in Westbrook, Maine, by Daniel J. Wellehan Sr., William Beaudoin, and Joseph Cordeau. Originally known as the Sebago-Moc Company, it gained worldwide fame for its handsewn leather boat shoes and penny loafers. The "Docksides" model, introduced in 1970, revolutionized the nautical footwear market and became a staple of the American preppy aesthetic. While the brand maintains deep roots in its Maine heritage, its production has evolved over the decades.

Historically manufactured in the USA, modern Sebago footwear is produced in several locations globally to meet international demand. Primary manufacturing sites include the Dominican Republic, Mexico, and El Salvador, with some specialized production in Southeast Asia. Recently, the brand has returned some of its premium craftsmanship to Maine through limited "Made in USA" collections. Ownership of the brand transitioned from the founders to Wolverine World Wide in 2003, and subsequently to its current owner, the Italian group BasicNet S.p.A., in 2017.
