Busuu is a leading global language learning platform that combines self-paced digital courses with a social network of native speakers. The company was founded in 2008 by Bernhard Niesner and Adrian Hilti. The brand is named after the Busuu language of Cameroon, which was nearly extinct at the time of the company's inception; the founders even filmed a documentary to raise awareness for the language during their early marketing efforts.

Originally established in Madrid, Spain, the company relocated its headquarters to London, United Kingdom, in 2012 to facilitate its global expansion. Since its move, the core technological development, software maintenance, and pedagogical design have been primarily handled out of its London offices, though it maintains a presence in Madrid.

In early 2022, Busuu was acquired by the American educational technology giant Chegg for approximately $436 million. Following the acquisition, Busuu became an operating subsidiary of Chegg, integrating its language services into Chegg’s broader ecosystem of student services while continuing to serve over 120 million learners and 600+ corporate clients worldwide.
