Suunto was founded in 1936 by Tuomas Vohlonen, a Finnish adventurer and inventor who revolutionized compass manufacturing by introducing a liquid-filled field compass. Over the decades, the brand expanded from precision instruments into outdoor sports watches, dive computers, and heart rate monitors, becoming a staple for athletes and explorers worldwide.

While the brand maintains its core identity and high-end manufacturing facility in Vantaa, Finland, its ownership has transitioned through several international conglomerates. Originally a Finnish family-owned business, it was acquired by Amer Sports in 1999. In 2019, Amer Sports (and Suunto) was acquired by a consortium led by the Chinese sportswear giant Anta Sports. However, in 2022, Suunto was sold to the Chinese technology company Liesheng, a specialist in wearable electronics.

Today, Suunto continues to design and handcraft many of its premium products in Finland, leveraging its heritage of Nordic precision. However, as part of the Liesheng ecosystem, it benefits from large-scale technological integration and global distribution networks headquartered in China. The brand remains a leader in the sports technology sector, known for its rugged durability and advanced software integrations like SuuntoPlus.
