Founded in 1975 by James Jannard in a California garage, the brand initially gained fame for its innovative motorcycle grips made from a material called 'Unobtainium.' This spirit of innovation eventually transitioned into eyewear, leading to the creation of the iconic O-Frame goggles and later, a wide range of performance sunglasses that are used by professional athletes and casual users alike.

Historically, Oakley products were famously 'Made in the USA,' specifically at their 'interplanetary headquarters' in Foothill Ranch, California. However, following the brand's acquisition by the Italian eyewear giant Luxottica (now EssilorLuxottica) in 2007, manufacturing operations expanded globally. Today, while some specialized lines are still assembled or finished in the United States, a significant portion of manufacturing takes place in Italy and China. Apparel and footwear under the Oakley label are typically produced in various Asian countries, including Vietnam and Bangladesh.

Oakley remains a subsidiary of EssilorLuxottica, the world's largest eyewear company. This merger of the French lens expert Essilor and the Italian frame specialist Luxottica has solidified Oakley's place within a massive portfolio of luxury and performance brands. Despite the shift in ownership and manufacturing locations, the brand maintains its design and engineering hub in California, continuing to pioneer technologies like Prizm lens optics.
