Oakley, Inc. was founded in 1975 by Jim Jannard in the United States, initially selling motorcycle grips and later expanding into eyewear and sports equipment. In 2007, Oakley was acquired by Luxottica, an Italian eyewear giant, for approximately $2.1 billion. Luxottica, established in 1961 by Leonardo Del Vecchio, is a vertically integrated company that designs, manufactures, distributes, and retails eyewear brands. In 2018, Luxottica merged with the French ophthalmic optics corporation Essilor to form EssilorLuxottica S.A., creating the world's largest eyewear company. As of 2025, EssilorLuxottica continues to own and operate the Oakley brand, along with other eyewear brands such as Ray-Ban, Persol, and Oliver Peoples, and retail chains like LensCrafters, Pearle Vision, and Sunglass Hut. The company is headquartered in Paris, France, and Milan, Italy, and is listed on the Euronext Paris stock exchange under the trading symbol 'EL'.
