Quality Street was first introduced in 1936 by Mackintosh's in Halifax, West Yorkshire, England. Its founder, Harold Mackintosh, aimed to create an affordable but luxurious selection of chocolates and toffees by using innovative wrapping technology to provide Individual portions. The brand was named after the play 'Quality Street' by J.M. Barrie, which influenced the iconic Regency-era characters that adorned the packaging for decades.
Throughout the 20th century, the brand became a staple of British holiday traditions. The manufacturing remains deeply rooted in its original home, with the vast majority of the global supply still produced at the Halifax factory in England. This facility produces millions of individual sweets daily to meet high demand, especially during the festive season.
In 1988, the brand was acquired by the Swiss multinational Nestlé. Under Nestlé's ownership, Quality Street has expanded its global reach and modernized its selection, though it retains many of its original 'favourite' sweets like the Purple One and the Green Triangle. Today, the brand is managed as a key part of Nestlé's global confectionery portfolio.
