Stella Artois is one of the world's most recognizable premium lagers, with a heritage that traces back to 1366 in Leuven, Belgium, specifically to the Den Hoorn brewery. The name 'Stella' (Latin for 'star') was introduced in 1926 when the brewery released a special Christmas beer, while 'Artois' pays tribute to Sebastian Artois, who became the master brewer in 1708 and eventually bought the brewery in 1717.
While its heart remains in Leuven, where the flagship brewery produces a significant portion of global exports, Stella Artois is now manufactured in multiple countries to satisfy international demand. This includes production facilities in the United Kingdom, Brazil, and previously the United States, though many markets still prioritize the 'Belgian-brewed' status for their premium positioning.
Today, the brand is the crown jewel of Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev), the world's largest brewing company. The brand has evolved from a local Belgian seasonal beer into a global icon through sophisticated marketing and its signature 'Chalice' glassware ritual. It remains centrally managed by the Belgian-headquartered multinational, maintaining its status as a leading European export lager.
