Schweppes is one of the world's most iconic beverage brands, with a history dating back to 1783. It was founded by Johann Jacob Schweppe, a German-born watchmaker and amateur scientist who developed a process to manufacture carbonated mineral water in Geneva, Switzerland. This invention marked the birth of the modern soft drink industry. The brand eventually moved its headquarters to London, England, where it received a Royal Warrant and became synonymous with premium mixers.
Schweppes is a truly global brand, and its products are manufactured in multiple countries across nearly every continent. Production usually takes place in local facilities operated by regional bottling partners who hold the rights to the brand in their specific territory. Because of this localized production model, the exact manufacturing country depends on the region where the bottle or can is purchased.
The ownership of Schweppes is complex and divided by geography. In most of the world, including Europe and many international markets, the brand is owned by Suntory Beverage & Food Ltd, a Japanese multinational. In the United States and Canada, however, the brand is owned and distributed by Keurig Dr Pepper. In other regions, such as Australia, The Coca-Cola Company holds the rights. Despite these divided rights, the brand maintains a consistent identity as a leader in tonic water and sparkling mixers.
