Altra Running is a prominent American athletic footwear brand known for its innovative "Zero Drop" (now called Balanced Cushioning) and foot-shaped toe box designs. The brand's journey began in Orem, Utah, where founders Golden Harper and Brian Beckstead experimented with modifying traditional running shoes in a toaster oven to create a more natural running experience. Officially launched in 2009, the brand was later acquired by ICON Health & Fitness in 2011.
In 2018, Altra was acquired by VF Corporation, a global powerhouse in the apparel and footwear industry. Under VF Corporation's ownership, the brand's headquarters transitioned from Utah to Denver, Colorado, in 2019. This acquisition provided Altra with significant resources for global expansion and technical development while maintaining its core focus on natural movement.
Manufacturing for Altra products occurs across a global network. While the brand maintains some specialized production or assembly in the United States (primarily for its "Made in USA" tagged models), the majority of its mass-market footwear is manufactured in major footwear hubs across Asia, including China, Vietnam, Thailand, Taiwan, and Indonesia. This multi-country strategy allows the brand to meet worldwide demand while utilizing technical expertise in specialized regional factories.
