Freixenet is an iconic name in the world of sparkling wine, deeply rooted in the heart of the Penedès region in Catalonia, Spain. The brand's history began in 1861 when Francesc Sala Ferrés started a wine business, which was later transformed by the 1914 marriage of Pedro Ferrer Bosch and Dolores Sala Vivé. Together, they combined their families' estates—La Freixeneda and Casa Sala—to launch the Freixenet brand, focusing on the traditional Cava method that would eventually make them a global household name.
While the brand remains quintessentially Spanish, its manufacturing footprint has expanded globally. Most of its famous 'Cordón Negro' Cava is produced in Sant Sadurní d'Anoia, Spain, but the brand also produces Prosecco in Italy and various still and sparkling wines in other international viticultural regions. This global reach ensures that the brand remains a leader in the sparkling wine market by adapting to local tastes while maintaining its heritage.
In 2018, the landscape of the company changed significantly when the German group Henkell & Co. Sektkellerei (now Henkell Freixenet) acquired a 50.67% stake in the company. This merger created the world's leading sparkling wine group, combining German distribution prowess and historical production with Spanish winemaking tradition. Today, Freixenet is the flagship brand of this joint venture, which is headquartered in Wiesbaden, Germany.
