Patagonia, Inc. is an American retailer specializing in outdoor clothing, equipment, and food products. Founded in 1973 by Yvon Chouinard in Ventura, California, the company has grown to operate stores in over ten countries and factories in 16 countries. In September 2022, Chouinard transferred all voting shares (about 2% of total company shares) to the Patagonia Purpose Trust, a trust overseen by the Chouinard family dedicated to using Patagonia’s profits for philanthropic environmental purposes. The other 98% of company shares were transferred to the Holdfast Collective, a grantmaking organization that advocates for environmentalist policy. The two nonprofits will donate 100% of Patagonia’s future profits (roughly $100 million annually as of 2022) to environmentalist efforts. This ownership structure ensures that Patagonia's profits are directed towards environmental causes, aligning with the company's long-standing commitment to sustainability and environmental activism.
