Canderel is a globally recognized brand of artificial sweeteners, best known for its use of aspartame and sucralose to provide a low-calorie alternative to sugar. It was first launched in France in 1979 and quickly became a household name across Europe and South Africa as part of the growing trend toward calorie-controlled diets and diabetic-friendly food options.
The global ownership of Canderel has transitioned through several major corporate hands. Originally developed by G.D. Searle & Company, the brand later became part of Merisant following a buyout of Monsanto's sweetener business. In recent years, the brand's international rights (excluding the US) were acquired by Whole Earth Brands, while its UK and Irish operations have been managed through specific regional distribution networks.
Manufacturing takes place in various locations globally to serve local markets efficiently, with major production facilities historically located in Europe and South Africa. Today, Canderel continues to innovate by expanding its product range beyond traditional tablets and powders to include Stevia-based variants and liquid sweeteners, maintaining its position as a leader in the sugar-substitute market.
