The brand's origin dates back to 1912 when Alfred Ritter and Clara Ritter founded the company in Stuttgart, Germany. The famous square 'Sport' design was introduced by Clara in 1932, specifically created to fit comfortably inside the pocket of a sports jacket without breaking.

Today, the brand remains a family-owned business, operated by the third and fourth generations of the Ritter family under the parent company, Alfred Ritter GmbH & Co. KG. The manufacturing is centralized primarily in Waldenbuch, Germany, where they maintain high standards for their multi-variety lineup.

Starting in 2018, Ritter Sport became the first major chocolate manufacturer to source 100% certified sustainable cocoa for its entire range, a commitment visible on the packaging today.
