Japp is one of Sweden's most iconic chocolate bars, featuring a distinctive blend of soft meringue/nougat and caramel coated in thick milk chocolate. It first debuted in 1947, launched by the Swedish confectionery giant Marabou, which had been founded by Johan Throne-Holst in 1916. The product was inspired by the British Mars bar but was adapted to suit Scandinavian flavor profiles.
Today, Japp remains a central part of the Marabou portfolio. While Marabou was originally a Swedish independent company (and sister company to Norway's Freia), it was acquired by the multinational Kraft Foods in 1993. Following a corporate spin-off in 2012, the brand became part of Mondelēz International. Production continues to be anchored in Sweden, primarily at the factory in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm, though the owner company is a global entity headquartered in the United States.
