Winston is an American brand of cigarettes introduced in 1954 by the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. The brand is named after Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where R.J. Reynolds began his business. Initially, Winston quickly became one of the top-selling cigarette brands, using the slogan 'Winston tastes good like a cigarette should.'
In 1999, R.J. Reynolds sold its non-U.S. operations to Japan Tobacco, making Winston available internationally. In 2014, Reynolds American agreed to purchase the Lorillard Tobacco Company, and to alleviate antitrust concerns, Winston, along with other brands, was sold to Imperial Tobacco for $7.1 billion. As a result, Winston became part of Imperial Brands, a British multinational tobacco company headquartered in Bristol, England.
In the United States, Winston is manufactured by ITG Brands, a subsidiary of Imperial Brands. Internationally, Winston is produced by Japan Tobacco. The brand has been known for its commitment to quality, using a blend of Burley tobacco to provide a light aftertaste, and has been a significant player in the tobacco industry since its inception.
