Founded in 1919 by Karl Edvard Lundström in Skellefteå, Sweden, the company revolutionized the availability of high-fiber, long-lasting rye bread. The brand's name was inspired by King Gustav Vasa, reflecting its deep-rooted connection to Swedish heritage and national identity.

Over the decades, Wasa expanded its reach from Scandinavia to global markets, emphasizing healthy and natural ingredients. In 1999, the brand was acquired from Novartis by the Barilla Group, a prominent Italian food corporation. Today, while ownership is Italian, Wasa maintains its traditional production hubs in Filipstad, Sweden, and Celle, Germany. The brand continues to focus on sustainability, having achieved CO2 neutrality across its operations by offsetting emissions and investing in renewable energy.
