The brand began in a small deli where Hellmann sold his wife's recipe for mayonnaise, eventually labeling the jars with his signature blue ribbon. While the brand originated in the United States, it is now part of the extensive portfolio of Unilever, a British multinational consumer goods company. Due to its massive global scale, Hellmann's (also known as Best Foods in some regions) is manufactured in multiple countries to serve various local markets, including facilities in the United States, United Kingdom, and across Europe.

Today, the brand focuses on sustainability and health-conscious alternatives, such as the Light Mayonnaise variety seen here, which contains 65% less fat than standard mayonnaise. It remains the leading mayonnaise brand worldwide under its current parent company, Unilever.
