Birkenstock is a heritage-rich footwear brand most famous for its 'Arizona' two-strap sandal design, which features a signature anatomically shaped cork-latex footbed. The brand’s history dates back to 1774 in Germany, where Johann Adam Birkenstock was registered as a shoemaker. Over centuries, the family developed the specialized arch supports that would eventually become the foundation of their global footwear success in the mid-20th century.
While the brand remained family-owned for nearly 250 years, it underwent a significant ownership change in 2021. The brand is now primarily owned by L Catterton, a private equity firm backed by the French luxury conglomerate LVMH (Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton). Despite this corporate shift, Birkenstock maintains a strong commitment to its German roots, with the vast majority of its manufacturing processes still located in Germany across various specialized production sites.
