Budweiser Budvar Original is a world-renowned Czech lager with a rich tradition dating back to 1895. It was originally founded in the city of České Budějovice (historically known as Budweis), which has been brewing beer since the 13th century. Unlike many other global beer brands, Budweiser Budvar remains a state-owned enterprise, held by the Ministry of Agriculture of the Czech Republic.
The production is strictly localized to the České Budějovice brewery to protect its Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status. This ensures that every drop of the 'Original Czech Lager' is brewed using local Žatec hops, Moravian malts, and water from deep artesian wells located directly beneath the brewery. The brand is also well-known for its long-standing legal disputes with Anheuser-Busch InBev over the use of the name 'Budweiser'.
