The Ordinary: Scientific Transparency in Skincare

The Ordinary is a pioneering brand in the beauty industry, known for its focus on functional beauty and clinical formulations. Launched in 2016, the brand revolutionized the market by offering high-quality active ingredients, such as Retinoids, Vitamin C, and Hyaluronic Acid, at accessible price points with transparent, science-led communication.

Brand Origin and Manufacturing

The brand was founded in Toronto, Canada, under the umbrella of DECIEM, often referred to as 'The Abnormal Beauty Company.' DECIEM's vertically integrated model means that the majority of The Ordinary products are researched, formulated, and manufactured in its own state-of-the-art facilities located in Toronto. This localized control ensures the efficacy and quality standards the brand is globally recognized for.

Ownership and Global Expansion

In 2021, the beauty conglomerate The Estée Lauder Companies increased its investment to become the majority owner of DECIEM. By 2024, Estée Lauder completed its full acquisition of the company. Today, The Ordinary continues to operate out of its Canadian headquarters while benefiting from the global distribution network and logistical support provided by its American parent company, maintaining its reputation as a leader in minimalist, ingredient-focused skincare.
