Pantene is a global hair care brand that originated in Switzerland in 1945, inspired by the discovery of Panthenol's strengthening properties. Initially owned by Hoffmann-La Roche, the brand gained international fame for its 'health-oriented' hair care approach. In 1985, it was acquired by Richardson-Vicks, which was subsequently bought by Procter & Gamble (P&G) later that year.
Today, Pantene is one of P&G's flagship beauty brands. While the brand has its roots in Switzerland and the labels often mention German offices for distribution (Procter & Gamble, 65823 Schwalbach/Ts., Germany), high-volume production for the European market, specifically for products sold in Spain and Portugal, often takes place in P&G’s specialized manufacturing facilities in France or other regional hubs. The ultimate ownership remains with the American multinational Procter & Gamble, headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio.
