Skechers is a major American multinational footwear and apparel brand that has evolved from a niche distributor into the world's third-largest footwear company. Founded in 1992 by Robert Greenberg, who previously founded L.A. Gear, the brand initially gained traction with utility-style boots and skate shoes before diversifying into performance and lifestyle categories.

Manufacturing for Skechers is distributed across several countries to optimize production costs and utilize specialized infrastructure. The vast majority of its products are produced in China and Vietnam, which account for nearly 90% of global output. Additional manufacturing facilities are located in Indonesia, Cambodia, Brazil, Mexico, and Romania. While the company is headquartered in California, it does not maintain domestic manufacturing plants in the United States.

In a significant shift for the brand’s history, Skechers transitioned from a publicly-traded company to a privately-held entity in September 2025. This followed a $9.4 billion acquisition by 3G Capital, a global investment firm. Despite this change in ownership, the founding Greenberg family retained a minority stake and continued to lead the company's operations, ensuring continuity in its management and design philosophy.
