Marabou Chocolate

Marabou is one of Sweden's most iconic chocolate brands, recognized worldwide for its unique cocoa flavor. The brand was founded in 1916 by Norwegian chocolatier Johan Throne Holst, the founder of Freia, who chose the name Marabou after the stork on the Freia logo because the Freia name was already registered in Sweden.

Today, the brand's main production facility is located in Upplands Väsby, Sweden. While the brand is quintessentially Swedish in culture and positioning, it is currently owned by the American multinational conglomerate Mondelez International. Despite the change in ownership, the brand maintains its status as a Purveyor to the Royal Court of Sweden.

In recent years, the brand has been at the center of geopolitical discussions due to its parent company's operations in Russia. This has led to various boycotts in Nordic countries, highlighting the complex relationship between local heritage brands and global corporate ownership.
