Senseo is a coffee brewing system developed by Dutch companies Philips and Douwe Egberts, introduced in the Netherlands in February 2001. The brand was co-owned by Philips and Douwe Egberts, each holding a 50% stake. In January 2012, Sara Lee Corp. acquired full control of the Senseo trademark from Philips for €170 million, aiming to expand into new coffee segments and markets. Philips continued to design, manufacture, and distribute Senseo machines under a nine-year agreement. In 2021, Philips sold its consumer lifestyle division, including the Senseo brand, to Chinese private equity firm Hillhouse Investment, leading to the formation of Versuni. Versuni now owns the Senseo brand, which is produced in multiple countries. The Senseo coffee system is known for its coffee pods, offering various blends such as Classic, Strong, Extra Strong, and Mild, as well as flavored options like Paris French Vanilla and Vienna Hazelnut. The brand has become an international cultural icon and a commercial success, with over 33 million appliances sold worldwide by 2012.
