The brand was originally created by the American company Economics Laboratory (now Ecolab) in 1953. Over the decades, it became a staple in households worldwide, known for introducing innovative formulations like the first biological powders and the dual-layered Powerball tablet.

Today, Finish is owned by Reckitt (formerly Reckitt Benckiser), a British multinational consumer goods giant. While the brand has its roots in the United States, its manufacturing operations are now spread across multiple international locations to serve global markets. Ownership was transitioned to Benckiser in 1987, which later merged with Reckitt & Colman to form the current parent company headquartered in Slough, United Kingdom.
