Oatly was founded in the early 1990s based on research from Lund University in Sweden. The brand was established by brothers Rickard and Björn Öste, who sought to create a nutritious plant-based milk alternative that was more sustainable than traditional dairy. Their patented enzyme technology allows them to turn fiber-rich oats into a creamy liquid while keeping the heart-healthy beta-glucans intact.
Oatly operates a robust global supply chain with specialized production facilities in Sweden, the Netherlands, and the United States. They have also expanded production capabilities into Asia, including facilities in China and Singapore, to meet the rising demand for dairy alternatives worldwide. The brand emphasizes local production where possible to minimize the carbon footprint associated with transportation.
Initially a private Swedish company called Cereal Base AB, the brand expanded into Oatly Group AB. While it went public on the Nasdaq in 2021, its ownership structure includes significant investment from the Belgian family-owned investment firm Verlinvest and the China Resources conglomerate. Despite its global stakeholders, Oatly remains headquartered in Malmö, Sweden, and continues to operate as a leading independent player in the plant-based milk market.
