Listerine is one of the world's most recognized oral hygiene brands. Originally formulated by Dr. Joseph Lawrence in 1879 in the United States, it was named after Sir Joseph Lister, a pioneer in antiseptic surgery. The brand was first commercialized by the Lambert Pharmacal Company.

Today, the manufacturing of Listerine for the European market, including Denmark, is primarily handled in high-capacity facilities in Italy. While the brand has historical American roots, it has seen several shifts in ownership over the decades. In a significant corporate restructuring, the consumer health division of Johnson & Johnson was spun off into an independent company called Kenvue in 2023. Kenvue now holds ultimate ownership of Listerine, operating as the world's largest pure-play consumer health company by revenue.
